Your UFS-QOL SSS
Your score helps describe the severity and impact of your current symptoms. It does not by itself diagnose the cause of the symptoms or determine whether embolisation is appropriate.
What it does not tell you:
- What is causing your symptoms — several different conditions produce the same score.
- Whether you are suitable for embolisation, which depends on imaging, examination and your own preferences.
- Anything about how your symptoms will change without treatment.
Take this score to your GP or specialist. It is genuinely useful as a starting point for that conversation — and as a baseline to compare against later.

What this score measures — and what it does not
This questionnaire does not diagnose anything
It measures how severe and how troublesome your symptoms are right now. It cannot tell you what is causing them, it cannot tell you whether you have uterine fibroids, and it cannot decide whether embolisation or any other treatment is right for you. Only a consultation, an examination and the appropriate tests can do that.
What this score measures
Eight questions about fibroid-related symptoms over the past three months — heavy bleeding, clots, flooding, pressure, cramping and fatigue — each answered on a five-point scale.
The raw total (8 to 40) is converted to a 0 to 100 scale. A higher score means more severe symptoms. This is the Symptom Severity Scale only, not the complete UFS-QOL questionnaire, which also includes health-related quality-of-life subscales.
The low, moderate and high bands shown with your result are a practical guide used by this practice to help you read your score. They are not official categories of the instrument.

Common questions
What is the UFS-QOL Symptom Severity Scale?
It is the eight-item symptom section of a validated questionnaire developed to measure the burden of uterine fibroids. The raw answers are converted to a 0 to 100 score where higher means worse symptoms. It is the standard outcome measure in fibroid treatment research.
What score counts as severe?
The scale does not have official severity categories in the way the prostate score does. The bands shown on this page are a practical guide used by this practice to help you interpret your result, not part of the published instrument.
How much does the score usually change after uterine artery embolisation?
Published series generally report a large fall in symptom severity scores after uterine artery embolisation, with most of the improvement in the first three to six months. Individual results vary, and embolisation may reduce, delay or avoid the need for surgery rather than guarantee it.
Can this score tell me whether my fibroids can be embolised?
No. Suitability depends on imaging — the number, size, position and blood supply of the fibroids — as well as your symptoms, your blood count and whether you hope to become pregnant. The score describes symptom burden only.
Are my answers stored?
Not in the public calculator. Scoring happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to us unless you choose to complete the “Get in touch” section and press send.
